A garden shredder which did not work properly - the motor turned without any torque, making it useless for shredding anything.
The fault was the run capacitor for the motor - these are a common failure but fortunately are cheap and easy to replace.
The capacitor is used to create a magnetic field in a second set of windings, phase shifted from the first set so that the two create a rotary motion in the motor. Without it, there is nothing to cause the motor to rotate, the results being little or no torque and the motor rotating slowly or not at all.
