Diversity

Diversity is the princple that in any particular installation, it is unlikely that every electrical appliance will be switched on and using power simultaneously.

This can also be applied to certain individual appliances such as an electric cooker - it is very unlikely that all of the heating elements will be on simultaneously for a long period of time as the thermostats will switch them on and off to regulate the temperature.
